Why Carrots Help Improve Eyesight |
Everyone knows that carrots help to improve your eyesight. You are told it from the time you are very young, either as irrefutable fact or as a cute statement about how you never see a rabbit with glasses. But the claims that carrots help to improve eyesight have some real reasons behind them. Here are the real reasons why carrots help to improve eyesight.
Beta Carotene
Your eyes require a certain amount of vitamin A to function at their best. A diet lacking in vitamin A will adversely affect vision sooner or later so getting enough vitamin A can definitely improve your vision, especially if you were previous deficient in this essential vitamin. But how does this relate to the fact that carrots contain beta carotene?
Beta carotene, a substance that carrots are just packed with, can be converted by the human body into vitamin A as necessary. This may seem like a roundabout way of getting enough vitamin A but considering that too much vitamin A can be harmful to the body, it is good to know that you can consume significant amounts of beta carotene and your body will only make vitamin A from this beta carotene as needed.
Once beta carotene is converted into vitamin A, a process which takes place in the liver, it can then travel through the body to the retina. In the retina this vitamin A is used to make rhodopsin. Rhodopsin is especially important in maintaining night vision.
Anitoxidants
In addition to beta carotene, carrots are packed with antioxidants. These antioxidants are great for your overall health and are excellent for your eyes in particular. They can even help to prevent macular degeneration. They may even go so far as to help protect you from senile cataracts which are the leading cause of blindness in elderly persons.
Should You Eat As Many Carrots As Possible?
You do not want to try to go overboard eating carrots just to attempt to improve your eyesight. Your body can benefit greatly from receiving sufficient amounts of carrots and the vitamins and antioxidants that they contain but excessive amounts of carrots will not result in greater improvements in your vision. You want to obtain the nutritional benefits that you can from carrots and stop there.
Will Carrots Improve Everyone’s Eyesight To The Same Extent?
Everyone’s eyesight is different. Clearly, carrots are not the only influencing factor when it comes to eyesight so protecting the health of your eyes in all ways is essential to preserve and even improve your eyesight. And don’t forget genetics. Some people are born to have excellent eyesight and some are not. What you are trying to do with carrots and other attempts to improve your eyesight is to maximize your unique eyesight potential.
